Last weekend I braved the cold morning and headed out to shoot the sunrise near Raffles Hotel in Applecross with the talented landscape photographer James (you should check out his work if you don’t know him!). The last time I woke up before the sun rose was probably during last year’s FXA Landscape Photography Workshop down south. As it’s currently winter in Perth, sunrise is generally closer to 7am in the morning. So waking up a bit before 6am to head out doesn’t seem too bad if I can brave the chilly morning.
Once I was out of the house and standing in the cold morning air, I was well and truly awake. Once I found the framing I wanted for my shot and set up my tripod, the waiting game began. It was actually quite peaceful to just enjoy the scene in front of me with some casual chit chat with another photographer. It was mainly a high to medium cloud kind of morning. As the light gradually creeped into the scene, it lit up the water and the sky. I shot all the images in this blog post with the all rounder XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 lens.
Most of the shots were taken at 55mm. I’ve never really thought of using a telephoto zoom lens for landscape work. James had shot with one and I was very impressed. It was a really nice effect to see the details of the landscape shot when you use a telephoto lens.
It was fantastic to see the changing colours in the sky as the sun rose. Thanks for stopping by today.
