The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) is located in the Perth Cultural Centre precinct. It’s a short walk from the Perth Train Station, making it convenient to get to. It houses the state art collection which includes Indigenous art, contemporary art and 19th/20th century paintings. After a coffee stop at Eilio, my friend and I headed met up with another friend at AGWA. It was my first time visiting AGWA. While it may not be as impressive as many of the galleries and museums in North America or Europe, nor comparable to NSW Art Gallery which I recently visited on my trip to Sydney. It is still great to see investment and support given to AGWA, injecting Perth with art and culture.
We spent a couple of hours of our Saturday morning exploring the following exhibition:
- Unknown Land
- Portrait Month and Portrait Project
- WA Focus – Finlandisation by Juha Tolonen
- Black Swan Prize for Portraiture
The Black Swan Price for Portraiture was by far the busier and most impressive exhibition. It’s the third richest art prize in Australia and attracts some very talented artists. There was even a portrait of a well known pharmacist Gerald Burns. It was really interesting to read about the subject and the artists as well. I’m glad I made time to check it out on the final few days of the exhibition.
Thanks for stopping by today.
