I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed visiting the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The memorial is impressive and really honours those who have sacrificed. It’s comprised of a few different parts. The commemorative area is probably the most iconic, which includes the Hall of Memory with the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. The second part is the galleries and museum section, which focuses on Australia’s ward time history. Lastly (the area I didn’t visit) is the research Centre containing important records.
As the day we visited Canberra was a public holiday, the Last Post ceremony was particular packed with visitors that day. This ceremony occurs daily at 4.55pm and it’s well worth the visit. The ceremony begins with the national anthem, followed by the sound of the piper and visitors who are invited to lay wreaths and floral tributes next to the Pool of Reflection. Walking around the commemorative area gave me a mixed sense of sadness, hope and gratitude. I really enjoyed my visit to the War Memorial, it was definitely a place that makes people reflect on the past, present and future. I love the black and white photos in this post, I think black and white captures the moment and place a lot better.
This is a shot of Anzac Parade looking down from the War Memorial. In the distance you can see Parliament House.
Thanks for stopping by today.
