Doing the Franz Josef guided heli-hike was one of the highlights of my New Zealand roadtrip. It was a once in a lifetime experience that is well worth the price in my view. Weather in the Glacier Country region can be temperamental at the best of times. They don’t give the go-ahead for hiking on the glaciers until the day of the hike.

We had a long drive ahead from Wanaka to Glacier Country on the west coast of New Zealand’s south island. We were staying at a quaint little place called Wanaka Lodge. We got up while it was still dark to have an early morning breakfast and chatted to the lodge owner who was cooking up some egg and bacon. I loved the communal dining room with it’s heavy wooden table and leather couches. it felt like I was in some sort of mountain side log cabin.

After the walking Hooker Valley track, we hit the road south wards towards Lake Wanaka. Along the way we had two major stops to make, a salmon farm and Lindis Pass.

We left our bed and breakfast in Lake Tekapo after a hearty breakfast. It took us around 2 hours to get to the start of the Hooker Valley Track, with a few stops along the way to take some photos. We just couldn’t get enough of the South island landscape.
