2018 Persimmon Festival

Back in May, Raeburn Orchards in the hills hosted it first ever official Persimmon Festival. It was a beautiful sunny autumn day. The bright orange leaves contrasted perfectly against the blue sky. While it was advertised as a persimmon festival, the orchard also grew plums, nectarines, apricots, pears, apples and many more. The orchard was filled people picnicking, photographing each other and photographing the autumn colours. These are some of my favourite shots from the few hours we spent walking around.

Whipper Snapper Distillery Workshop Tour, Perth

Whipper Snapper Distillery Perth

A couple of weekends ago, we checked out a local Perth urban whiskey distillery called Whipper Snapper. It’s Australia’s first urban distillery and with a cool start up vibe, having only been around for 4 years. I’m not much of a whiskey drinker but it was interesting to do the workshop tour. Taste the 3 whiskeys on offer. Learn about the whiskey making process. I have a greater appreciation of whiskey and the art and science of whiskey making. I now understand how and why not all whiskey taste the same and the art and experimentation behind it. I had a fun time drinking and snapping photos during the tour. I enjoyed taking product and still life shots, not something I do often. The lighting in the distillery wasn’t amazing, but I think my little Fujifilm XT10 and 27mm f2.8 lens did a great job. p.s. you’re notice a Star Wars reference in one of the photos since the owner is a big star wars fan.

Chinese New Year lights at Kek Lok Si Temple

Visiting Kek Lok Si when I’m in Penang for Chinese New Year has become a bit of a tradition. This is a short and sweet throwback to my 1 week holiday in Malaysia back in February. Being the Chinese New Year period, the city was lined with a heap of red lanterns. The colour red being a lucky colour in Chinese culture. Since the road up to the temple was pretty packed, we decided to walk along the streets until we got to a good vantage point to take in all the colourful lights of the temple. Over the years, the temple grounds have grown. Construction for the giant Guan Yin statue is finally done. The fujifilm XT10 and 27mm f2.8 kit did a great job taking fairly sharp photos given the low lighting conditions. Combined with some Lightroom magic, I think the shots turned out quite nicely.

Photographing icebergs at Black Diamond Beach, Iceland

While we were waiting for the Zodiac boat tour, we spent the morning exploring Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Black Diamond Beach. The beach is known for the washed up icebergs. Some of which are larger and taller than human beings. The photo above is one of my favourite shots at the beach. I had a lot of fun experimenting and shooting long exposure photography. The weather was pretty poor and rainy. I thought processing the image in black and white gives it an fine art quality to it. Colour didn’t add much to the photograph. As the icebergs were floating and moving in the water, it was challenging to get a completely still photo of the iceberg(s). We ended our day in Hofn, a quiet fishing town further north of the glacier lagoon. The town is known for it’s Icelandic lobster. It was one of the few hot meals we had at a local restaurant. The lobster roll was delicious. A great way to end the day after a harrowing boat ride exploring Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Photographing Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon was one of my favourite places to photograph in Iceland. In fact we can back twice, somewhat unintentionally. The first afternoon we arrived at the lagoon it was too late to do the Zodiac boat tour of the lagoon. However the afternoon was far from wasted. We had the most brilliant afternoon light. I absolutely loved the photos taken that afternoon. One of the shots was my favourite of 2017 and is currently my desktop wall paper. A frequent reminder of the beautiful light we experienced that afternoon in Iceland. This was also one of the few spots where we took a group photo to mark out journey through Iceland.

We came back the next morning and spent the morning exploring the Lagoon and Black Diamond Beach. The light the next morning while we waiting around for our Zodiac tour was not as good as the day before. It didn’t help that the it rained for most of the morning while we were there. Still, I think I managed to get some shots that I liked. Be prepared for an onslaught of floating iceberg photos
