We started our second day in Rotorua early as we were hitting two popular tourist sights that required a bit of a drive. First up, it was Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland. Beware, there is quite the rotten egg smell throughout the park given that it’s an active geothermal area. To be honest though, you get used to the smell quite quickly that you hardly notice it after a while. It’s a fairly large park with a variety of colourful and interesting hotsprings and boiling mudpools. Definitely worth a visit and you’ll have plenty of photographic opportunities. One of the special attractions is the Lady Knox Geyser that shoots up to heights of 10 to 20 metres. Some of my favourite images from the north island was actually taken here at Wai-O-Tapu.

Over the last 2 months, with social distancing, I’ve had a bit more time at home. This meant I finally finished editing my photos from my 2 week New Zealand road trip taken several years ago. I feel grateful that I have had the opportunity to travel quite a bit over the last 4 years and as a result have constantly fallen behind on my photo editing. As I edited and went through my photos, it reminded me all the things New Zealand has to offer and I can’t wait to go back this year if the boarders between Australia & New Zealand opens up.

Social distancing documentary project, part III
I’ve had a few weeks break from blogging but have carried on with taking photos around the house and when I’ve been out on walks and other daily life activities. These images were mostly taken back in April 2020 during the high of social distancing measures. During the month, in my free time on the weekend, there was a lot of home cooking, weekend walks grocery shopping.

As many of us spend so much of our time at home these days due to COVID-19, cooking and baking has taken off! I’ve been enjoying researching recipes and watching YouTube videos of chefs showing people how to many simple meals at home. I’m spending much of my non-work time either grocery shopping or at learning to cook a new dish or two on the weekend and also some photo editing my backlog of photos. To try to squeeze in some actual physical activity since gyms have been closed, I’ve tried to walk to do my grocery shopping or do some in-home yoga and exercises. I’m not a particularly good cook but I have enjoyed trying a range of more time consuming dishes like making dumplings and lasagne. On my walks, I have also tried to support local cafes by buying takeaway coffee and food.

Australia went further and further into lock-down mode throughout the month of March 2020. I was inspired by other photographers I followed who shared their ideas what they were going to do during this lockdown period to keep up with their photography, business and creativity. The COVID-19 pandemic is definitely one for the history books. Like many photographers out there, I thought doing a mini documentary project to capture daily life during this historic period of time would be interesting and insightful. Something I could look back upon and tell the story of what it felt like living during a pandemic through my own eyes.
