Every year the Good Food and Wine Show comes to Perth. This year was the first time I checked it out. I’ve always avoided it because the crowds are always insane. A friend of mine was keen to go again this year and I figured why not check it out for once. This year it was at the Perth Convention Centre. We purchased tickets for the Saturday session and headed in at 10am when the doors opened to beat the crowd.
Appreciating wine, cider and coffee
As the name of the show would suggest there were plenty of alcoholic drinks to taste. My friend and I attended a riesling tasting session ran by presumably a well known wine reviewer. We tried all sorts of ciders and liqueurs. We even tried “healthy tonics” (which was probably the hardest thing I drank all day!) and cold brew coffee.
Cheese tasting
There were loads of cheese to taste from across Australia. We were getting full from just alcohol and dairy.
Food Theatre
We didn’t spend much time watching any of the cooking demonstrations but there were plenty scheduled for the day at the Good Food Theatre (Celebrity chefs). The Kleenheat Kitchen had two ex-My Kitchen Rules contestants from Perth cooking up some Satay Chicken and Duck Curry.
Gourmet Produce
We tried balsamic dips, chutney, olives and chocolate. Food products that I don’t routinely seek out.
Overall experience
As the day progressed, the crowds thickened to the point where you had two to three layers of people in front of you before you get to the tasting table. At that point, it was time for us to head off. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and it was better than I expected it would be. It was fun trying out food and drinks that I don’t normally have. It’s certainly expanded my palette. While there was so much that I could buy, I was very selective with what I did purchase. I ended up just getting a pack of yummy raw chocolate and cheesy cheese to have with crackers.
