This is the second year I volunteered as a photographer for Fringe World in Perth. I had a pretty good experience as a Fringe World photographer last year and thought I would shoot for Fringe once again.
For those of you who don’t know much about Fringe World, it’s a summer festival consisting of hundreds of shows. The line-up always includes comedy, circus, theatre, visual arts, dance and cabaret as some examples. It show cases performers from all around Australia and has plenty of international guest performers too. With each year, the festival grows bigger. Shows are not only based on Northbridge and the City of Perth. But also expanded out into the ‘burbs such as Subiaco and South Perth.
As a photographer for the show you’re allocated shows to photograph. One of the perks of being a volunteer is being able to attend any show you want as long as it’s not a full house. Since I was away for most of the time Fringe World was on, I didn’t get to watch any additional shows other than the shows I photographed. Volunteering for an arts festival like this does give me a better sense of appreciation of the talent out there in the world. I watched shows that I wouldn’t have thought to watch.
Photographing the shows and events definitely hones my event photography skills. I used my Fujifilm X-T10 and the 23mm f2 and 35mm f1.4. I was definitely pushing my camera and lenses to the limit given that all 4 shows I shot were at night and more often than not under very dark conditions. Here are some highlights from the 4 shows I shot for Fringe World this year.
If you missed Fringe World 2019, be sure to check it out next year. Thanks for stopping by today.
