I was inspired to write this post when I was flicking through some old photos on my computer. This is a throwback to my surprise birthday trip down south to the beautiful town of Denmark almost two years ago. I am reminded of the beauty that is in my back yard and that I don’t have to go too far to explore amazing places. Denmark is a coastal town approximately 5 hours drive away from Perth city with a population of only a few thousand residents. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a little invite message two years ago from an awesome bunch of old high school friends to “pack an overnight bag” for a surprise trip “somewhere”. To make the most of our two-nights three-days weekend getaway, I took the Friday afternoon off from work and was whisked away straight after work by my friends.
We arrived by early night fall to a beautiful holiday house on a small hill. It was a massive house given there were only seven of us. It had four bed rooms, two living areas, a massive kitchen and a large loft area. We had a breakfast for champions the next morning before we headed out to explore Denmark and it’s surrounding areas.
It was unfortunate that it was a fairly rainy weekend down south, but we were graced with warm sunlight every now and then. After breakfast we made our way to the picturesque Greens Pool and Elephant Cove. Greens Pool is a natural ocean water pool, with crystal clear water and pristine white beaches. It is definitely one of my favourite beaches. Given we were when the weather was still pretty chilly (September), we were effectively the only people at the beach. One of my friends braved the freezing cold water to have a dip.
There were also beautiful copper coloured granite boulders scattered everywhere along the beach and in the water.
Elephant Cove is another popular area right next to Greens Pool, given the tide was a bit high, we didn’t walk all the way around to the cove. But you can make our the elephant shaped boulders from behind.
We spent the afternoon exploring a couple of wineries around the area. We also went to Bartholomews Meadery, which is a family run honey business. We tasted a range of honey wines (meads) which were absolutely delicious.
We spent out night having dinner at Kirby’s at Rickety Gate. It was a beautiful three course meal to celebrate my belated birthday.
A storm was brewing that night so we spent the night in the warmth of our holiday home, chilling and chatting away the night. Next up, part two of my relaxing weekend away.
