Shopping and minimalism. You’re probably thinking, these two concepts must be polar opposite. Being a minimalist must mean not shopping for new things ever. I’ve never been one to subscribe to the notion of retail therapy. If I have to classify myself, I’m someone who is an intentional shopper. I not someone who finds joy in the act of shopping or window shopping. Generally speaking, I only shop if I have something I’m looking to buy and it’ll often be for a purpose.
This post is sparked by my recently shopping experience. I had a few keys items that’s been sitting on my shopping list for a little while. The trigger point for me to head to the shops was when I needed a new pair of trainers after wearing down my old pair. On my list was also getting some outdoor gear as Kathmandu coincidentally had a sale on that weekend. Minimalism isn’t about not buying anything, but rather it’s about buying things that add value to your life. This is of course different for each individual as we all have varying interests and tastes. For me, I wanted to get a new comfortable pair of trainers for gym classes and day hikes. I didn’t mind that it would cost me a little bit more, as long as it was comfortable and lasting. I was also looking for a light weight rain jacket/windbreaker combo, which I could use on hikes and general rain protection on my way to/from work. It was mostly to prepare myself for more outdoor activities and future travels. Kathmandu isn’t the cheapest, but the sales and quality made it a valuable buy.
Since purchasing those two items, I’m pleased to say that I’ve used it many times and it has brought value to my life. That is what minimalism means to me. It’s not about buying the cheapest or the least number of items. Shopping itself didn’t bring me joy, using the items I have bought has. Thanks to bloggers like Zen Habits, The Minimalists and Becoming Minimalist, the word on living intentional and meaningful lives is spreading. I’m pleased to be pursuing my version of a meaningful life.
