Since moving to Houston, we haven’t been to a farmer’s market. We were driving by River Oaks one morning and noticed there was a big banner for a farmer’s market.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that and was excited to check it out when we had a free weekend!
A couple of Saturdays ago, we finally had a free morning to drop by the market.
Location: 2752 Buffalo Speedway Houston, Texas 77027
Market Website: Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market
In classic Houston form, there was plenty of multi-storey and open air car parking for market goers (unlike many of the farmer’s markets you find in Australia where parking is a constant struggle!)
The Houston summer weather is hot and humid. So be sun smart! The market is actually located on a large open concrete car park. The concrete ground was probably emitting even more heat on to us as we walked around the market.
The market isn’t very large, but it had pretty good variety of stalls:
- Baked goods
- Coffee stands
- Meats and poultry stalls
- Condiments and ready goods
- Farm direct and fresh local produce
- Hot food stalls (e.g. dumplings, tacos, smoked meats)
They even had a live music band playing at the market. That always adds to the fun and chilled market vibes.
I was glad they had a few shaded tables and chairs for people who wanted to get out of the sun and heat when having a quick bite of food at the market.
We didn’t have a lot of time at the market since we were on our way to Truth BBQ.
But we did get a cold brew coffee to quench our thirst and picked up a delicious ham and cheese croissant from Love Croissants as a morning snack.
Photographer’s Field Notes
Images were taken on the FUJIFILM X-T4 with the Fujinon 23mm f2 lens.
It’s my favourite everyday carry combo.
The 23mm focal length is versatile enough for a variety of situations—close up food shots all the way through to environmental and portrait shots. You just have to zoom with your feet.
All images are straight out of the camera, shot with the Kodachrome 64 film simulation. One of my favourite film simulations for documentary style urban photography.
Why? I like the subdued tones I get out of the images.
Wrap up
Houston weather is always on the warmer end, so it can be a struggle to do outdoorsy things in Houston.
I wouldn’t mind coming back to the market to have some of the hot food (maybe in cooler weather, since the market is open year round)
Dropping by a market is a pretty common weekend activity in Australia. If you miss it, you should try our the Urban Harvest Market in River Oaks.
Until next time,
Janice
